You’re hip. You skip the Hot Topic at the mall and shop at places that sell used clothes to get an authentic vintage look. Maybe you’re into making wire jewelry, designing your own clothes or putting together a killer collection of vintage hats. You probably own a pair of Converse Chuck Taylors, the one sneaker that seems to fit every look on the planet.

Chucks are comfortable and cool. They’re also very easy to customize. You can stitch patches onto them, embroider them, write on them with Sharpies, or use a mild bleach solution to give them a cloudy, tie-dyed look.  You can also lace them in lots of different ways. This is a subtle touch, but one that people notice. Everyone looks at your shoes first, right? Experimenting with shoe lacing patterns gets you out of that “everybody does it” criss-cross routine, and high-top Chucks give you a large canvas for your creative ideas. Try some different looks, just be sure that the laces can still do their job, which is to keep your shoes on your feet.
